LEADERS 100 Alumni Campaign

LEADERS 100 ALUMNI CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF...

March 9, 2010

Dear Leader,

Leader.  It’s a weighty word that identifies us as people who get things done.  Not always easy, is it, to be a leader?  As alumni of Leadership Montana, we have explored many aspects of leadership.  One of those is collaboration.  As leaders, we don’t get things done all by ourselves.

Today, we are asking you to be a leader for Leadership Montana.  We are asking you to collaborate with all LM alumni to get something done.  We need you; we need each other.

Quite frankly, Leadership Montana accomplishes amazing things on a shoestring budget.  It’s time to change that.  This superb, high-quality program deserves better.  LM needs more money each year to support the work of connecting and strengthening our state’s leaders for greater success. We’re asking you to join us in a challenge.

An anonymous Leadership Montana alumna has put up a $5,000 challenge grant to launch an annual fund-raising effort: the Leaders 100 Campaign for Leadership Montana.  Like this alumna, leaders came together to support us when we were invited in; let’s pay it forward by stepping up to this challenge and giving a personal gift in demonstration of our support for the Leadership Montana program.  We encourage you to consider a gift of $100 or more, but your participation and show of support is far more important than the dollar amount you give.

Lead today by joining us in this Leaders 100 Campaign challenge. A gift form is attached to this email.  Please print, complete, and mail to your check to the address on the form. If you prefer, you may give online at www.leadershipmontana.org by clicking on the “Donate” button.  Your contribution will be fully tax deductible.

We need you; we need each other.  Will you please give today?

Sincerely,

Rick Reid,  ‘05 Cathy Conover, ‘06       Mike O’Neill, ‘07

Pat Leiggi, ‘07              Brenda Peterson, ‘08 Leslie Messer, ‘08

P.S. Weekly updates will be broadcast through the first week of April via the Leadership Montana website to celebrate the fundraising efforts by region and by class year. Let’s see what we can do by April 9!

What Leadership Montana members have to say...

My participation in Leadership Montana fostered a CLEAR vision of Montana as a community, rather than a state.  Various members of this “community” carried messages representing all economic, ethnic, and social populations, so that all voices were heard. Today, with this leadership knowledge, I have developed new working relationships that have directly benefited my community as well as my organization.

Leslie Messer, Richland Economic Development Corp., Sidney

Keith Hatch, director of Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, Jim Cottrill, Chairman of Hometown Helena, and Bob Fusie, President of the Board of Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds welcome Leadership Montana to the new exhibition hall and event facility at the Fairgrounds in Helena.    The event was a special gathering of Hometown Helena on Friday January 15.

Justice James Nelson of the Montana Supreme Court visits with the Class of 2010 in Helena on Friday January 15.   Justice Nelson was joined by Justice Patricia Cotter and Justice Brian Morris in discussing the function of the Court with the members of Leadership Montana.  This conversation has been an annual event of Leadership Montana.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer
Governor Brian Schweitzer addresses the Leadership Montana Class of 2010 on Thursday January 14 about Montana's budget situation and the opportunities for energy development in Montana.

What Leadership Montana members have to say...

Literally, Leadership Montana has impacted my life from the front door of my house thru the front door of the House of the Montana Legislature.  Shoots Veis (a classmate) was instrumental in helping our local community subdivision obtain a "Safe Routes to School" grant so that we could build a bridge across the Big Ditch in Billings so that our children could get to school safely.  Eric Simonsen has brought me in to support current Legislation to support children with Autism (my oldest son is Autistic) -  These are just two examples of relationships that have come from Leadership Montana and have taken me from the front door of my home to the front of the Montana Legislature and have a direct impact on my life.

Leadership Montana Members Prepare for Bobcat/Grizzly Game

While in Bozeman for session three of Leadership Montana,  the Class of 2010 met at Bobcat Stadium and had a chance to test the turf before the Bobcat/Grizzly game.

Board of Regents and Leadership Montana share ideas...

The Leadership Montana Class of 2010 met in Bozeman November 18-20, 2009.  In addition to hearing an inspirational lecture on leadership by MSU President Geoff Gamble, the class had the opportunity to brainstorm "quality education" with the Board of Regents, Commissioner of Higher Education and university system executives.  The work was intended to advise the Regents Workgroup on topics related to reforming and reinventing the Montana University System.
The discussion was moderated by Regent Todd Buchanan, Leadership Montana Class of 2005.

Pictured at left:  Karyn Ottolino, Billings, Class of 2010 and Regent Todd Buchanan, Billings, Class of 2005.

What Leadership Montana members have to say...

"Montana, and the issues facing the state are incredible. Leadership MT explores those issues in a manner which immediately enables it’s participants to engage in the discussion and empowers them to take responsibility in addressing the issues. The cohort of members in each class, and in other classes for that matter, learn to treat each other and these issues facing the state with the manner of stewardship it requires to successfully provide leadership. It must be mentioned that lasting networks and friendships are built through Leadership MT and I have and continue to look forward to using that network to find partners, and opponents, for the issues I find important and meaningful for the state of MT."

Todd Buchanan, Billings, Buchanan Capital and the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education

Class of 2010 visits the Flathead...

The Class of 2010 recently visited the Flathead for the second session of the program.

The first stop was at the Salish Kootenai Tribal headquarters, where the SK Tribal Council hosted the class in Council Chambers for lunch and conversation.  On to Whitefish and Grouse Mountain Lodge.   Dr. Larry Swanson presented his economic data and analysis, and the group heard from Joe Unterreiner of the Kalispell Chamber about the Flathead economy.  A panel from Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest and other recreational businesses discussed tourism and recreation in the area.   The group visited Whitefish Mountain Resort at Big Mountain on Saturday and Sharon and Carmen led the “Integrated Work” session, “Appreciate Diversity.”

A real highlight was the Friday evening activity at Flathead Valley Community College.  The class was treated to a “Chef’s Table” gourmet feast prepared by the students of the College’s culinary arts program, under the direction of Chef Howard Karp.   The world-class five course meal was served in the kitchen where the group was able to observe the preparation behind the scenes.  Chef’s Table his held regularly at the College and is most definitely worth checking out.  Here’s the link..

Thank you to FVCC President Jane Karas and Colleen Unterreiner, Class of 2009, for arranging this great evening.

What Leadership Montana members have to say....

My professional networks have dramatically increased. I have many more "friends" I can call on for information and cooperation on some things I am doing in my work. Some have called me for information especially on Native American cultural issues and advice. They have a friend, as a source of information.

Alumni Signature Event features healthcare and extraction industries
Alumni Signature Event features healthcare and extraction industries...

An interesting panel on healthcare issues kicked off the second annual Leadership Montana alumni signature event, "Advancing Montana:  Leaders on the Move" held in Helena September 18-19.    Organized by Leadership Montana alumni, the healthcare discussion included representatives of healthcare providers and insurers.  The discussion was moderated by Joan Miles, Montana Hospital Associaton.
The following day, representatives of the "extraction" industries- mining, coal, timber, oil - spoke about the issues facing their industries as US and Montana energy policies shift.  This discussion was moderated by Mike Halligan, Washington Corporations and Leadership Montana alumnus.
The event also featured an dinner at the Exploration Works in the Great Northern Town Center.
Leadership Montana alumni from across the state attended the two-day event in Helena.

What Leadership Montana Members have to say...

What Leadership Montana Members have to say…

My greatest benefit of participating in LM has been meeting and getting to know so many great people from all across this state.
Personally I think the impact is like a shock wave it continues to resonate. I was already involved in my community as a Zoning Commissioner.(volunteer) I decided to work for the Obama campaign(paid, yet very little) as Field Organizer for Lewis & Clark County, volunteered to fill a vacancy on the Helena City Council Commission(one of four finalist) and became a committeeman for precinct 1 of the L&C Democratic Central Committee. Who knows what's next. LM is still in its infancy. I believe it is just beginning and should receive all the support available because the results are just blossoming. Alumni groups in many cities just gaining momentum. Networks emerging and developing. Like Harvard (or is it Yale) Skull and Bones, LM alumni are in every aspect of Montana life.

                        Dan Casey, Helena

I have been able to place students in internships because of my connections with Leadership Montana.  My association with Leadership Montana allows me to bridge higher education with industry.

Kevin Hood, University of Montana, Missoula

There is no doubt in my mind that LM is developing a sustainable core of committed leaders.  I know the importance of staying involved.  I will work closely with Jo Ann Eder and Aaron Kampfe to ensure that LM has a presence in Red Lodge.  If the tools of LM are used I have no doubt in my mind that our community will work more closely together.

I have developed a relationship with Jo Ann Eder an alumni because of LM.  We are working on some projects that I would have passed on in the past, but know I see the value.  I am on a hospital board that is heavily involved in some large projects with various opinions and the tools of LM have taught me to appreciate the difference of opinions.

Rich Bruner, First Interstate Bank, Red Lodge

I have become active statewide in community activities. Montana Ambassadors, Chair of the Montana State Chamber MSU-B college of Business advisory board among others.

Rick Reid, Region Manager, Montana Dakota Utilities

I have refocused professionally for the better.  I am exploring a run for the state legislature.

Bruce Parker, First Interstate Bank, Billings

Tangible impact in work and community is continued and renewed involvement in “bigger picture” projects and affirmation of adoption of a leadership/management style that reflects those core values.  I have met alumni from Helena area thru monthly luncheons and remain active in attending and supporting that effort to sustain local leaders.

Jean Branscum, Dept. of Labor and Industry, Helena

The impacts on my life has been so tremendous.  Words cannot even explain how Leadership Montana changed my life.  I have been more engaged with communities more than ever.   I seen my role as a Native American working and educating other Montana's on our culture, traditions and customs.  I am amazed about how open minded some are and see a need to continue to work with those who feel they already know about "Indians".  To re-educate them the correct way.   I work with our local educational systems on how important it is to know the basics of banking, mainly savings.  I stress how important it is to connect our history to the present as our ancestors were very strategic in planning, which was crucial to our survival.

Barbara Braided Hair, First Interstate Bank, Lame Deer

I have remained involved in the local alumni group and am looking forward to our gathering in Helena this fall.  Beyond that, I've progressed my career and have put energy into the civic issues I care about.  I've been continually challenged in my career (financial) and have had to address some very difficult situations.  I've tapped my Leadership Montana experience for guidance.  On the civic front, rather than passively supporting organizations or issues I have used a little courage and stuck my neck out offering my insight and opinion while engaging others.  Lastly, I took a  leap to help organize a fundraiser for our local land trust which had the $ results I wouldn't have dared dream.  It was exciting and rewarding and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

                        Michele Bazzanella, D.A. Davidson, Helena

Relationships.  I have formed relationships, both business and personal, that have aided me in my business and professional dealings.

Lisa Perry, PPL Montana, Billings

LM has made my move to Helena much smoother as I had already met (through the program) many of the community leaders in the area and I had a much stronger understanding of how to contribute effectively to the community (e.g. Hometown Helena, State government, etc.).  I have become involved more closely in the legislative process by supporting bills and sharing my views in public forums (most recently was a conversation with Leadership Helena regarding Term Limits).

Tom McGree, Payne Financial Group, Helena

The MDU Resources Foundation (Montana Dakota Utilities) has announced a five-year, $25,000 grant to support the work of Leadership Montana in developing a sustainable network of committed leaders for Montana.

MDU and the MDU Resources Foundation have supported Leadership Montana through the organization period and the first five classes of the program.  This investment extends the MDU support through 2013.
